On August 1, which seems like ages ago, I announced charm squares as the monthly stash buster challenge. At the time, I had no plan but knew whatever I made had to come together quickly. It was Disappearing Nine Patch to the rescue. I’ve previously made a couple of these and each time thought it would be easier to simply cut the units and piece the blocks. Once again, I did not listen to that inner voice and pieced big nine-patch blocks, then cut them apart. I find it hard to keep the seams straight when cutting the blocks ...

Sadly, I have no Friday Finish this week. I did a fair amount of sewing but did not make it to the finish line with anything. That will definitely be corrected next week!!
I did a fair amount of quilting this week and my mind wanders when I machine quilt. I’m sure that is a contributing factor as to why I am not a good quilter. Haha! Sometimes, though, I have a thought that leads me down another rabbit hole. I thought about making variable stars from charm packs.
Remember this little table mat from last week? This is ...
read moreThis quilt finishes about 65" x 78" and is made using 5" squares. You can use packages of 5" charm squares, cut your own squares or use fat quarters. This is a great scrappy quilt.
The pattern is a free download from Moda Fabrics and the link is at the end of this article. Here is the video I prepared for this quilt.
When going through my scrap fabric or after finishing a project, I use my AccuQuilt cutter to cut 5" and 10" squares. I can use the 5" charm squares and 10" layer cake squares to make many ...
read moreA “Disappearing 4-Patch” may look intricate and complicated, but it’s really very easy. If you can sew a simple 4-patch, you can sew this quilt.
There are many great how-to tutorials out there. I chose these two YouTube videos as my favorites—
Jenny at the Missouri Star Quilt Company and
Laura Ann Cioa at Sew Very Easy.
After watching both, I decided to “merge” their info together to make my own Disappearing 4-Patch. Here’s how…
Jenny (MSQC) has you use a charm pack in her version, while Laura (Sew Very Easy) has you cut larger squares from fat ...
read moreThis week’s Friday Finish is The Neighborhood Quilt. This was a quick and easy quilt and I just love how it turned out. The pattern is “The Neighborhood” (of course!) by Villa Rosa Designs. You can find the pattern here and it is available as a pdf download or a little “Rose Card.”
This pattern uses two charm packs plus background, border and binding fabrics. All of my fabric is from Moda’s Quotation line by Zen Chic. The fabrics I used are in my little Etsy shop here. The background, an off-white with gray and black dots is ...

I'm going nuts making masks!
Since then, I've made many more masks to donate - I'm closing in on 1,000 masks - and about 40 more masked hexagons. So here's the finished quilt, with a total of 73 masked hexagons, all socially distanced. My free, revised ... read more
If you are one of the thousands of quilters giving time and fabric to make lifesaving masks, thank you. For me, making masks is not only a good deed, but a powerful way to reduce anxiety in a tragic time.
And here's what it would have looked like on white:
It's not finished - it's just a top - because as I continue to make masks, I will grow it. The ... read more

Charm quilts, as the name indicates, are made with thoughts of good luck in mind. I'd heard the folklore that the magic happens because each piece is a unique fabric....but if one and only one fabric has been used twice, the quilt has a special magic. So that's what I did. My charm quilts were made for my babies because, as a quilter, I of course had to make them each a very special quilt.
I am prompted to think about ... read more
Good morning quilters! This week I have been working more on "Doll Delicious", the doll quilt to go with my large quilt named "Red Delicious". Thanks to Annie of "Annie's Quilt Orts" blog for naming the doll quilt. I like the name. I have 68 apple core pieces together and will finish it at 100 pieces soon. Since it is hand sewn, it is a good "take with" project. Here is a

Once my thread arrived, I was able to finish up the quilting in about five minutes!
For the binding, I used the leftover fabric from the backing. I like to cut a 2.25" binding, and for this quilt, I sewed the binding to the front by machine and hand stitched it to the back.
I really am wishing that I would have had another charm pack or two to make this quilt bigger and keep it for myself! But I ... read more
